On the 17th of Dec 2011, 1st Johor Bahru Company celebrated our 55th Anniversary Dinner.We had a simple dinner together at Restaurant Loon Sing, Taman Bukit Indah, Johor. Ex-BB members went to meet up and everyone really enjoyed the fellowship dinner.

We had a short rehearsal at our BB Resource Centre.

Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra

The Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra (東京佼成ウインドオーケストラ Tōkyō Kosei Uindo Ōkesutora^?, abbreviated TKWO) is a professional concert band that has long been regarded as one of the world's finest, perhaps rivaled only in recent years by the Dallas Wind Symphony (USA).

TKWO was established in 1960 by the lay Buddhist organization Rissho Kosei Kai at its headquarters in central Tokyo. TKWO Is highly active, both within Japan and abroad, as a professional touring and recording ensemble. Its members include some of the finest woodwind, brass, and percussion players in Japan.

From 1984 to 1996 the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra was directed by renowned American maestro Frederick Fennell, and since 2000 it has been directed by British conductor Douglas Bostock.^[1]TKWO has released more professional recordings than any other wind orchestra in the world, numbering in the hundreds of album titles. It has also played an active role in the commissioning of original works for wind band by both Japanese and foreign composers. Japanese composers whose works have been championed by TKWO include Yasuhide Ito, Hiroshi Hoshina, Tetsunosuke Kushida, Akira Miyoshi, Michio Mamiya, Bin Kaneda, Masamichi Amano, Toshiro Mayuzumi, Toshio Mashima, Isao Matsushita, and many others. Guest conductors of TKWO have included Alfred Reed, Arnald Gabriel, Robert Jager, Ray Cramer, and Craig Kirchoff, to name but a few.

The Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra often performs in Fumon Hall, an enormous auditorium located on the campus of the Rissho Kosei Kai religious organization in central Tokyo. Fumon Hall also regularly hosts the final level of the All-Japan Band Association national band competition. With nearly 14,000 participating bands (and around 500,000 contestants nationwide) the AJBA band contest is currently the world's largest music competition. TKWO is usually hired to make the definitive premier recordings of the required pieces commissioned each year for the enormous competition. TKWO is largely credited with defining the wind band idiom in Japan, where it is enthusiastically supported among school and community ensembles.

[HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR INSTRUMENT? =)]

WOODWIND CARE

Flute / Piccolo Care

Daily Care

1. When removing your flute from its case never pick it up by its keys. Remove it by the ends where there are no keys.

2. Put the flute together with a slow back-and-forth twisting motion, never push or pull the flute when assembling or disassembling this can cause the instrument to become bent at the joints.

3. Each time you put the flute together a small amount of debris will build-up on the tenons (this is normal), however, this can make it difficult to assemble. Always wipe the tenons (joints) with a soft cloth before assembling. (Fig.1)

4. The use of lubricants on the tenons is not recommended - this can cause damage over time. The only exception to this rule is on some piccolos and wood flutes that have cork joints. You should apply a small amount of cork grease to these joints, as needed, to aid in assembly.

5. After you are finished playing, use a cleaning rod with an absorbent cloth to swab out the inside of all parts to remove moisture. (Fig.2) Carefully wipe off the outside of the flute to remove oils or perspiration caused by your hands.

6. Always store your flute in its case when not in use, this helps prevent damage and aids in keeping the instrument from tarnishing. Do not place anything in the case that can press on the flute, this can bend keys.

Monthly Care

Check all screws and pivots to see if they are coming loose. If they are, take your flute to a repair shop to have them adjusted. It is not suggested that you try and adjust them yourself because they can be over tightened or damaged.

Yearly Care

It is recommended that you have your instrument checked and adjusted, if needed, by a repair shop. The shop may find adjustments or worn pads that are effecting the optimal performance of your instrument.

Clarinet Care

Daily Care

2. When putting your clarinet together, first apply a small amount of cork grease to the tenon corks. (Fig.1)

3. Apply a small amount of cork grease to the mouthpiece cork to help the mouthpiece move into position. (Fig.2)

4. When tightening the screws on the ligature, the device that holds the reed on the mouthpiece, take care not to over tighten them this can cause the screw to break.

5. After you are finished playing, pull a cleaning swab through the saxophone to remove moisture. (Fig.3) Carefully wipe off the outside of the instrument and keys to remove oils or perspiration caused by your hands.

Trumpet Care (And Other Valve Instruments)

Daily Care

1. Valves on brass instruments need to be lubricated on a regular basis. To do this: (a) Unscrew the valve cap and pull the valve out about half way. (b) Apply a drop of valve oil to the wide part of the valve. (Fig.1) (c) Push the valve back into position making sure that it is lined up correctly. (Note): The valve has a guide that keeps it in place. To check for correct alignment gently try to turn the valve. If it doesn't turn it is lined up. If it turns keep turning the valve till you hear a slight "click" and the valve stops turning.

2. Occasionally a mouthpiece will become stuck in the horn. If this happens don't try force to remove it - this can cause major damage to the instrument. Take it to a repair shop or music store to have it removed. Most shops do not charge for this service.

3. After you are finished playing make sure you remove any excess moisture from the inside of the horn by opening the water keys and blowing through the instrument. Carefully wipe off the outside of the instrument to remove oils or perspiration caused by your hands.

4. Always store your trumpet in its case when not in use, this helps prevent damage and aids in keeping the instrument clean. Do not place books or folders in the case, this can bend slides and cause valve problems.

Monthly Care

1. Check all slides to see that they move freely and lubricate them with slide grease if needed. (Fig.2)

2. The inside of your instrument needs to be cleaned regularly. This may not be needed every month but should be done at least every 3 months. See the section below on brass cleaning for more information.

Yearly Care

If you clean your instrument on a regular basis you may not need any additional yearly care, however, repair shops have the ability to chemically clean your instrument which is a more thorough cleaning than can be done at home.

Trombone Care

Daily Care

1. Great care is needed when handling your trombone. The smallest bump or dent in the slide can cause problems with its proper movement. Due to the precision needed in adjustment of the slide, repairs are time consuming and costly so...Be Careful !

2. The slide needs to be lubricated on a regular basis. Apply a small amount of slide oil or cream to the boot area (Fig.1) of the slide as needed. The boot is at the very end of the slide, so be careful not to allow the slide to slip off the trombone.

3. Occasionally a mouthpiece will become stuck in the trombone. If this happens don't try force to remove it - this can cause major damage to the instrument. Take it to a repair shop or music store to have it removed. Most shops do not charge for this service.

Brass Cleaning

Brass instruments need to be cleaned internally on a regular basis. The following is a description of that process. Please note that rotor instruments such as French Horns, Rotor Tubas, and Rotor Trombones should not be cleaned at home, they have special requirements and should only be cleaned by a qualified repair shop.

To clean your instrument you must take it apart completely. You will also need some cleaning brushes (available at music stores), valve oil, slide grease, and some liquid dish soap. You will also need a place to clean the instrument. Unless you have a large sink the bath tub is probably the best place.

1. Carefully remove all slides, valves and valve bottom caps.(Fig. 1&2) Extreme care should be taken with trombone slides as they are very delicate, especially when they are apart! If any of the slides are stuck take your instrument to a repair shop to have them removed. They can be damaged if not removed properly.

2. Place all the parts, except for the valves, in warm, not hot, water containing some liquid dish soap. Let the instrument parts soak in the water for about 10 minutes.

3. While the instrument soaks, take the valves and run warm water over them and brush out all openings in the valves with the valve brush. Shake off any extra water and set valves aside to dry.

4.Next brush out all tubes with the "snake" and the valve casings with the valve brush. Be sure to clean any debris from inside the valve bottom caps.

5. Use clean water and rinse out the instrument. Wipe off any excess moisture and set the instrument aside to dry thoroughly. It is important that the inside of your instrument is completely dry before you proceed.

6. Apply a small amount of slide grease to each slide and reassemble. Be sure not to put slide grease on the main trombone slide. Use slide cream or slide oil on this slide.

7. Install the valve bottom caps. Put a drop of valve oil on each valve and install them in their proper location. Valves are numbered and must be in the correct location to operate properly.

8. You are finished. Enjoy playing your newly cleaned instrument !

While performing on a brass instrument, the sound is produced by the player buzzing his or her lips into a mouthpiece. Pitches are changed in part through altering the amount of muscular contraction in the lip formation. The performer's use of the air, tightening of cheek and jaw muscles, as well as tongue manipulation can affect how the embouchure works.

The one essential thing in all brass playing is buzzing the mouthpiece--if you can't do it, you can't produce a sound. Most people have probably already done the thing it takes to produce a good buzz. The sound that kids produce as they imitate a tugboat's or motorcycle's sound is basically what a person needs to do if they want to be able to play a brass instrument. To produce this same type of sound, first, act like you are blowing out a candle. Don't puff out your cheeks as you blow, but keep them tight and use your throat muscles to push the air. That does not mean that you should tighten up your throat and thereby cut off the air. Keep your teeth apart and throat open so the air flow is not restricted. Then, as you continue to blow air, start to press your lips together but leave a small space in the very middle of your lips so the air can escape. Don't worry if all you hear is air at first, it takes a little bit of time to get this down. If that is the case though, press your lips a little closer together but still maintain the space in the center of your lips.

Once you have gotten a good buzz with your lips, it is time to place the mouthpiece on your lips. Hold the mouthpiece by its shank as close to the end as possible. This helps to prevent you from using pressure whenever you buzz. You should try to use as little pressure as possible when you play because damage to the lips can be done through the use of pressure. When you place the mouthpiece on your lips, try to place it as close to the center of your lips as possible with about 2/3 of your top lip and 1/3 of your bottom lip on the mouthpiece. Make sure that wherever you place the mouthpiece, that it feels comfortable to you. The way that you position the mouthpiece on your lips is called your embouchere. Your embouchere is as vital to your trumpet playing as buzzing is. A strong embouchere will help you out a whole lot in the future whenever you play for extended periods of time. I'll discuss later in further detail on how to strengthen your embouchere. Once you have established the placement of the mouthpiece, you are ready to buzz into the mouthpiece. Now, all you have to do is focus your buzzing techniques into the mouthpiece. Work on getting a buzz that has a clear tone and is not constricted. The main key to buzzing is to keep everything relaxed and not tense so the air can flow freely. The following sound clip demonstrates first a buzz with just the lips, and then on the mouthpiece.

Buzzing

Buzzing is a key element to brass instrument playing because it helps to improve a player's tone and overall performance. All it involves is playing the same note four times in a row as whole Try to hit a pitch that is easy for you to hit. As you hit that note consistently, it is time to start trying to hit others. To produce a higher note, focus your air more downward into the mouthpiece and blow more air. To hit a lower note, relax your embouchere and flip your lower lip into the mouthpiece and, again, blow more air.

In a marching band or a drum & bugle corps, the colorguard is a non-musical section that provides additional visual aspects to the performance. The marching band and colorguard performance generally takes place on a football field.They perform alongside the marching band at football games and most guards regularly compete in competitions during the fall. The purpose of the colorguard is to interpret the music that the marching band or drum & bugle corps is playing via the synchronized spinning of flags, sabres, rifles, or through dance. The color guard uses different colors and styles of flags to enhance the visual effect of the marching band as a whole. The number of members in a colorguard can vary. Guards can consist of a few members or have as many as 50 or more. This is often dependent on the size of the band, school or corps, the allotted budget, and the talent available among the potential members who try-out. Within the band, the colorguard is often referred to as the flagline or the simplest and most common term- guard.

Since the guard is the a visual component the performance, often the uniforms or costumes match the theme of the tunes the band plays. The flags may also go along with the theme in some ways. In drum and bugle corps, there used to be a requirement for a traditional presentation of the colors during the competitive show (called the "Color Pre"), but this fell out of favor around the early 1970s. A recent example of a Color Pre in show was the 2002 San Francisco Renegades Sr corps, used during "America the Beautiful" to open their program, but such a presentation was not a required part of the show.Guards today consist of both men and women that put in long, physically demanding hours of practice spinning and tossing poles and/or rifles in synchronization to achieve perfection. If even the slightest mistake is made during a performance, it can easily be seen by any onlookers and judges.

Originally, a military colorguard often traveled with a band, who would play a patriotic song. This use continued into the civilian marching bands, and today, a marching band's colorguard are usually found carrying equipment descended from those of military colorguard: flags, banners, mock rifles, or mock sabres. Some guards do use real sabres, without the sharpened point. During the 1950s and 1960s, much of the impetus for the evolution of the modern colorguard came from the arena of competitive drum & bugle corps. Pioneers from these corps traveled to other areas of the country to teach, introducing colorguards to more traditional bands. The band directors at the University of Memphis, Dr. Tom Ferguson and Art Theil, recruited music major Sam Shaw to start one of the first collegiate color guards in the South, the "Bengal Lancers" in 1975. Consequently, color guards spread quickly throughout the Midsouth. Color guards continued to sprout up throughout our country. Director of Bands at Northwestern University, John Paynter, was one of the first when he hired Bugle Corp specialist George Parks in 1976. The visual effect of spinning and shaking flags drew the attention of crowds and quickly caught on. Having visual impact for pieces played when the band stood still added a whole dimension to the performance. By the late 1970s and into the mid 1980s colorguards had been added to most Big Ten and Big 8(Currently Big 12) bands. Once these prominent university bands had colorguards, there was widespread inclusion of guards at high schools across the nation in the 1980s and 1990s. The popularity of colorguard has grown such that Winterguard, formed in 1977, has gained widespread membership and attention.

一、调音
我发现有蛮多人对于调音这项工作蛮陌生的。调音可不光是合奏时才需注意的。个人暖身和基本练习的时候，就必须要注意到自己的音准。还有就是音色。习惯做暖身和基本练习的朋友，在耐力以及对乐器的掌控上都会好很多。所以，将这样的动作变成习惯是很重要的。

二、嘴型
有些朋友蛮刻意压抑自己的嘴型，甚至是用自己的内唇在吹奏。用内唇吹奏，嘴型很容易被气息冲垮；为了不要压坏自己的嘴型，结果高音就吹不上去，岂不是本末倒置？我个人是认为没有什么固定的嘴型，也不是说用什么样的嘴型就可以保证各位高音一定吹得上。我所能给的建议是：先把中音域的长音、音色、音准练好，再往高音发展。吹奏高音时，所产生的气流较强，此时不妨施加一点压力去对抗它，以不破坏自己的嘴型为主，稳定后再慢慢释放那样的压力到最小。

三、暖身和基本练习
那怎样去做合适的热身练习呢？这样的练习可以放在早上的时间来进行。所练习的内容可依个人的程度去设定。不过，一般来说重点都会放在稳定的长音、平顺的连音，以你所能保持的力度为主(弱音) 。约十分钟到十五分钟，嘴唇适应后，再做音阶、音程、琶音等的练习。这些练习可以参照3D 的教本，但不是要各位拿3D 来练习。 3D 的教本主要是针对合奏时，所注意到的基本功为主。像是所谓的三升三降的音阶、音程观念，教材里面都有，各位不妨走个几遍，当成往后个人基本练习的方向。

四、号嘴 Buzzing 的练习
把吹嘴装上乐器时，可以先做号嘴Buzzing 的练习。也就是只用号嘴的练习。先找一段旋律，只用号嘴去吹。这样做会强迫各位用嘴型去寻得正确的音高，而不必依赖乐器。经过几周或更短的时间后，你们会发现，你们的吹奏都可在一定的音域范围内，吹出很好的号嘴声音。当号嘴Buzzing 有了成果后，在吹奏的观念上就更完善了。

五、分部练习
有些谱看起来很简单，没有什么特别，但如果要要求准确地做出谱上所有的记号，可就不容易了。要多练习，尽量达到要求。部门的每位成员都要注意以下几点：
　　
(1)注意力度的记号；
(2)以平稳的速度练习，不要求一下子达到速度的标准，可以先放慢练习；
(3)换音平稳，没有痕迹；
(4)注意最后一个音的长度；
(5)换气的位置要正确；
(6)每次开始都有一个清晰的发音。
　
六、节奏、节拍训练
不管是声部或打击部门，都逃不了这关。最好的训练方法就是拿节拍器练。像是Allegro 、 Largo 、 Andente 等常用的速度用语，一定要知道。特别是过门、独奏、主旋律等节拍的正确性一定要掌握。乐曲就像文章一样有段落之分，每个段落都有它所规定的速度。

如何保养你的乐器~

首先先告訴大家，低音鍵有時候可以用軟木塞塞住。這樣低音會比較不容易跑掉或漏氣。
First, we tell you, the bass keys can sometimes be stopped with a cork. This bass will be less likely to run away, or leak.

很多人不知道鍵油長啥樣子。就是長這樣。一瓶好像快要一百。不過大家可以到五金行買針車油代替。
Many people do not know the key to long-Sha Yangzi oil. Is a long way. Bottle like about a hundred. But we can go to the hardware store to buy sewing machine oil instead.

可以每隔兩個星期上一次。我是指你常常吹樂器的情形之下。呵呵～～

另外跟大家說個常犯的錯誤。就是你們看到的黑色蓋子。這個東西可以保護高音連動桿。
不要丟掉歐！！很重要的。放樂器時要蓋好再放。
Also tell you is that a common mistake. You see is the black lid. This thing can not even protect the pitch lever.

擦樂器注意事項。就是不要擦太仔細。先擦大方向。像是Bell口。
Note wiping instruments. Is not to rub too careful. First rub direction. Like Bell mouth.

細部用手指擦一擦就好了。還有蓋孔上面髒髒的會有點醜。不用沾水，只要來回擦拭就行了。

若你真的超愛護你的樂器，可以用衛生紙或是『吸水紙』夾一下高音的幾個按鍵口。

彎管（或稱鴨頭）保養。其實不用很麻烦，但是軟木一定要用『軟木膏』、或『凡士林』。目的只是在於讓吹嘴在塞進去時，不要『破皮』。破久了是要換的。

不過站長建議放在Bell口。呵呵～～

木管乐器的历史
木管乐器的起源可溯至两万年前的史前时代，那时人们已了解，对着中空的动物的骨或角或一截竹管、壳或有孔的葫芦吹气可发出声音。这种「乐器」就是原始的笛子，发声的方法就像是经由瓶颈吹气。古时候，在典礼祭祀或传达命令、示警时常用笛子，一些原始笛子至今还保存着，并常在一些民族的音乐中担任伴奏。尾端吹气的笛子吹奏时要直着拿，球形的笛子包括简单的圆形贝壳、骨头，或中空的石头，上凿一个吹气孔。
当然，很早的时候，人们就知道在管侧切一个凹口，对着尾端吹气可以发声，这种刻有凹口的笛子就是雷高德木箫的鼻祖，两者发声的原理完全相同。
我们还可发现另一种原始的乐器，就是将一片叶子置于拇指之间，用力吹气，会产生悠长的啸声，这种刺激空气的发声法在原始的部落中并不常见，其历史很难确定。最早的簧管（牧笛）可能是由一截竹管制成，末端则由会震动的簧片发声。这种简单的「乐器」任谁都会做，只要切下麦端，切成Ｖ字形放入嘴中吹就可，不管其起源如何，在文明开始前，牧笛已粗具雏型了。
这些早期的木管乐器没有指孔。用劲吹长笛，可吹出各种和音和有限的音域，但有牧笛只能吹出单音。当文明开始在东方和地中海萌芽时，乐器上也开始附有指孔增加音调变化。另一个进步是双管的产生；双手各拿着带有刻痕的长笛和牧笛，分别吹出不同的旋律。「奥罗斯」和「提比」双管牧笛是古希腊和罗马人最常用的木管乐器。
牧笛是西方文明古国的产物，而长笛则是原始部落主畏的木管乐器。但是到了文艺复兴时期，两者都成为西方最流行的乐器。从这时候开始，木管乐器开始改良，演进成现代的形式；按孔增加，音域扩充了，各种不同大小的同类型乐器也逐渐产生。由于音乐家到各国旅行演奏的次数频繁，音符的音高也有了一定的标准。雷高德木箫是最早具备现代形式的木管乐器，因为它本身即是古雅的乐器，没有经过太多的改良。从巴洛克时代起，雷高德就被音量较大，音色较美的长笛取而代之，从此就不曾改进。
然而，巴洛克的作曲家并没有将各种乐器的特殊音色，充份发挥出来，直到浪漫时期木管乐器变化多端的音色才作了淋漓尽致的发挥，交响乐团的木管乐器部份，一般包括两支长笛，两支竖笛，两支双簧管和两支巴松管。十九世纪，按键系统经过重新设计后，使得演奏者吹奏时更为轻松愉快，其中以德国长笛制造家贝姆的贡献为最大。此外，还有多种改良，使乐器本身更接近现在的形式，发挥更广的音域效果。本世纪初，木管乐器在管絃樂合奏中已扮演要角，而且也是重要的独奏乐器。

The History of Woodwind Instruments

Woodwind instruments’ origin can be dating back to some 20,000 years ago in the prehistoric times, when people already know, that blowing against the hollow animal bones or horn, or a length bamboos, shell, or hole in the gourd can produce sound. This "instrument" is the original flute. In ancient times, flute is used in the ritual ceremony, or to convey commands, warnings. Till today, some ethnical music still uses the original flute as accompaniment. When playing the end-blowing flute, the player needs to hold it straight. There is another type of flute, the “spherical” flute, which includes simple circular shells, bones, or the hollow of the stone, in which one needs to chisel out a hole to blow air through it.

Of course in ancient times, people knew that cutting a pipe on its lateral side, and blow the air through the end of the pipe can produce sound. This is the ancestor of the wooden recorder. Both use the same principle to produce sound.

We also found another original musical instrument, which is to place a leaf between thumbs, blow forcefully, and this will produce a long howling sound. This type of sound-producing principle is not common, and its history is difficult to determine. The first reed (shepherds pipe) may be made by a bamboo and the end of the bamboo by the vibrate-able reed which produces sound. Anyone could make such a simple "instrument", no matter what is its origin, long before the beginning of civilization, the concept of a shepherds pipe has been there.

These early woodwind instruments have no finger holes. If blow forcefully, one can produce harmonics and limited range of notes, but there are some shepherds pipe can only produce a single note. When civilization began to sprout in the East and the Mediterranean, the instrument also began improve in terms of the range of notes with the newly added finger holes.

Shepherds pipe is the product of an ancient civilization of the West, while the long flute the primitive tribes. But by the times of Renaissance, both have become the most popular musical instruments in the west. From that time onwards, woodwind instruments started to improve and modify, slowly evolve into their modern forms; by adding the finger holes increases the range, and since then many different sizes of instruments of the same family have been manufactured. As the musicians often travel to other countries to perform, the pitch of the notes have been demanded to be of certain standard. The wooden recorder is the earliest form of modern woodwinds, because it itself is quaint musical instruments, without much modification. From the Baroque era, the wooden recorder has been replaced by the louder and soothing long flute.

However, the Baroque composers did not fully utilize the tone colors of the various instruments. Not at least till the Romantic period that the tone colors of the woodwind instrument are fully utilized in the music. In a symphony orchestra, the woodwind section would include generally two flutes, two clarinets, two oboes and two bassoons. Instructions

Do a Right Hand Rifle Spin

Step1

Hold the gun with the small end, or nose, pointed toward the left. Your left hand should be on the nose, with the palm facing down. Your right hand should be on the neck with your palm facing up.

Step2

Push the nose down with your left hand as you twist your right wrist, spinning the rifle around in your hand but releasing your grip.

Step3

Tighten your grip with your right hand after the rifle spins, so that your hands are in the same place they were at the beginning of the spin.

Step4

Spin a few more times, then try a drop-stop on your last one.

Step5

Switch hands while the rifle is airborne and catch the nose in your left hand, while placing your right on the top of the butt end.

Do a Left Hand Rifle Spin

Step1

Hold the rifle with your left hand palm up about 10 inches from the end of the nose and your right hand on top of the rifle neck.

Step2

Push down with your right hand as you twist with your left, releasing your grip as the gun spins in your hands.

Step3

Spin one last time then try a drop-stop. Switch the position of your hands while the rifle is airborne so that your left hand is palm down on the nose and your right hand is palm up on the neck.

These simple practice tips can lead to better playing – and a fuller life.We live in a busy world, but brass players, like all musicians, need to set aside sufficient time each day to practice. It lays the firm foundation on which we build our musicianship. By working on what is most important to improve our playing, we can practice smarter – more efficiently – and have more time for living.

Tone is the most important aspect of playing any instrument, and making tone a priority is essential to longevity as a brass player. During practice sessions, devote fifteen minutes each day to tone development. Here are three areas to cover daily.

Mouthpiece practice
James Stamp can be credited for popularizing mouthpiece practice. I have found that students with tone problems improve vastly with a few weeks of mouthpiece playing for five to ten minutes a day.

A brass instrument is an amplifier: when the lip vibrates into the mouthpiece, the instrument amplifies the sound. Some players have a technique producing a sound that may be acceptable on the instrument but horrid on the mouthpiece alone. If you make sure the lips start together and then gradually work the lower lip into the mouthpiece, the tone improves dramatically on the mouthpiece alone. When you place the mouthpiece back on your instrument, you will sound like a different player. Practicing on the mouthpiece immediately after your warm-up will focus your ear on tone.

The embouchure we should strive for can be characterized as having the lower lip pouting inside the mouthpiece, which creates the beautiful, rich sounds we hear from great brass artists. Maynard Ferguson tells students that he plays high notes by gripping the mouthpiece. He is essentially talking about gripping the inside of the mouthpiece with his lower lip.

To develop your tone, try practicing any arpeggio exercise or passage (but avoid the high register). First play the passage on your instrument. Now create the clearest tone possible on the mouthpiece alone by working your lower lip into the mouthpiece. Once this mouthpiece tone has been improved, play it again on your instrument – and be prepared to hear a noticeable difference.

Lip bends
Practicing lip bends is actually a continuation of the concept learned from mouthpiece practice. It is an isometric exercise to develop the lower lip so it can grip the mouthpiece. Isometrics have been known for years as a solid means of building muscle. Yoga exercises, for example, are based on isometrics, toning and firming muscles through daily repetition. Similarly, for the brass player, lip bends isolate and strengthen the lower lip muscles.

Lip bends are actually note-bending exercises. Practice by playing a middle C (on the trumpet), then the half-step-lower B (second valve), then back to C. Now play the C, and use the lower lip muscle to push into the mouthpiece, which bends the C down to the B (without using the second valve). As you withdraw the lower lip, the C comes back again. Avoid kissing the mouthpiece with both lips.

Practice the lower lip roll first by pouting in a mirror. Once you have isolated the lower lip muscle, apply the technique to your instrument. Go down by half steps, recreating the half-step lower notes with your lower lip. The notes that are lowered without the new fingerings should sound almost as good as the \”real\” notes. After going through all seven positions, return to C and lip down two half steps.

After the muscles begin to develop and you start feeling some control in the lower lip (usually in one to two weeks), you can start on second line G (for trumpet) and bend the notes down by half steps through the seven positions. Each week, as you feel the progress in your lip, you can start on a higher open note.

Notes produced by bending will not be used during gigs. But the excitement you will feel when playing a high C – with the lower lip gripping the mouthpiece so firmly that you know the high C won\’t crack – will have you going back to practice lip bends for years to come.

Warm-down
One of the most critical practices to follow before putting the instrument away is the warm-down. Few of us are able to play for an extended period, put the instrument away, and encounter no problems the next time the horn comes out of the case. Brass players have consistency problems mainly because they bypass the warm-down. Lip muscles get tight after extended play and need to relax before stopping.

It takes only three to five minutes to relax the lips. Pedal tones are a great lip massage and will relax the muscles. Try playing a middle C, then drop the air speed and pull the mouthpiece off the lip slightly. The note should fall off to approximately an octave below, and the entire lip in the mouthpiece will pulsate. Continue through the seven positions, dropping an octave.

Next, try soft chromatics. Starting on middle C, go down through all seven positions and back up as softly as you can. If notes cut out, your lip is not relaxed enough and the lips are separating. Go back and do more pedal tones. Once you are able to play the lowest seven notes on your instrument softly without response problems, your lips are relaxed enough to put the instrument away.

If you are preparing for a special performance, warm down ten minutes the night before, with soft, low playing. The next day, your lips will be highly responsive.

So rethink your practice. Adding new concepts to your daily routine can improve your performance immensely.

Remember, it is not the time on the instrument that counts, but what and how you practice. Practice more efficiently, and you will not only notice improvements in your playing, but you will also find more time for that elusive balanced life.

History of the Snare Drum

By many accounts the history of the snare drum dates back to the Tabor, pronounced “tay-bur” found in Medieval Europe around 1300. It was a doubleheaded drum that had a single snare strand called a Tabor. In the Middle Ages the tabor was often played in unison with a three-holed pipe flute. Modern European folk music continues the tradition to this day.

The use of a snare drum in the military, probably came directly from instruments that were used by the powerful Ottoman Empire’s armies in the 1500s.The Ottomans possibly influenced Swiss drummers, which in turn influenced their local drum builders.

It became very popular in the 1400s with the fife-and-drum corps of Swiss mercenary foot soldiers for relaying signals.This version of the drum was a very big instrument that was carried over the player’s right shoulder, secured by a strap.

This longer “side drum” became better known as a field drum. The drum heads were tensioned by pulling a rope, very much like lacing a shoe. The method was to lace a cord in a W or Y pattern around the shell. Around the same time frame the European version of the snare drum spread to other countries. England had similar drums by the 1500s, although the name tabor was replaced with drome or drume.

In the 1600s, new methods of tensioning the drum were developed. This allowed the snares on field drums to be tightened more securely with screws. The former loose rattle sound of the snare’s gut was now more of a tight snap.

The increase in the tension on the drum heads allowed drummers to play faster and more complex rhythms. By the mid 1800s, snare drums were being built from brass and reduced in size for a higher pitched, crisper sound popular in symphony orchestras.

Classical music added the snare drum to provide color, or timbre, for march-like segments of music. In the 19th century it replaced the tenor drum of military bands. The sound of a marching snare is a classic military sound.

Modern Snare Drum Evolution

After 1900, drum and bugle corps increased the snare drum’s popularity. Metal counter-hoops were added to tighten the drumheads more efficiently. The now familiar coiled wire came into use for the snares.

Bringing the history of the snare drum into the modern era was its use in a trap-set. Traps were a mixture of drums, percussive insruments and cymbals assembled into a set of drums or drum set. This innovation was used in a variety of ways, including silent movies, jazz and ragtime music.

Rock-&-Roll emphasized a steady backbeat while Jazz use of the snare drum is known as comping, or supporting and interacting with the other musician’s in the band. In response to these popular music styles drum companies started making many different sizes and types of snare drums. Since the 1950s, improvements such as plastic drumheads and high quality snare throw-off mechanisms have allowed better sound control and great dependability.

The range of snare drums available today is staggering with many technical advancements in materials, shell design and hardware. That being said, the modern snare drum is still very much like its centuries old ancestors. The history of the snare drum has its roots as an Ottoman and Swiss military instrument. It has become the driving force behind many music styles around the world.

This is a great example of how this simple device evolved into an icon known the world over as the good ol’ Snare Drum.

How to be good drum major (field conductor) right ?

Hi everyone, my name is Junt Minalai from Bangkok Thailand.

This is my honors to writing this article to share my idea with everyone in Marching Band or Drum Corps world about Drum major topic.

I am conductor (Drum major) for Aimachi Marching Band from Nagoya Japan in this 5 years past (2003-Now) Ok friend, let talk and share some about Drum major thing.

Drum majoring is a performing art, as is music, dancing or any performing art. A great performance with an applauding crowd is very interesting and you will be fun with that.
Drum majoring is also a leadership art. Always work towards the goal of helping your band being the best it can be. If you do, you will proud and have a good moment in your life as a drum major position.

So the next question it gon na be………….

“How to be good drum major (field conductor) right ?

For art that no anything really right or really wrong so for me about drum major job this is tips that I always use for my conducting time.

For today marching band or drum corps show usually begins with a “Salute” from the drum major. The salute is traditionally the beginning of judging in a competition, and also signals for beginning or the end of a band’s or drum corps show.

You need to practice this one in front of the mirror that so important you are band or corps leader how great salute you do that make your band members have confidence for start the show.

“Commands”
project your commands voice, vocal. Commands are loud and easily understood that one of Characteristics of a Successful Drum Major.
Practice that many time as you can but don’t too shout the commands you will probably loose your voice. For me make lower sound for command way better than make higher sound.

“Conducting”
Conducting is a means of communicating artistic directions to performers during a performance. There are no absolute rules on how to conduct correctly, ( Wikipedia®)

For marching band or drum corps conducting too. The pattern for conducting have many way to do that that we call “style” you can choose one

But don’t forget that style should be clear easy to find down-up beat and make you band members easy to watch and clear enough to watch from very far spot on the field practicing or performing time. And also have many Pattern for conducting that you need to learn and know that like a simple time pattern 2/4 ,3/4 ,4/4 or Compound time, Complex time pattern etc ….so we will talk deeply in next time for this stuff.

“Confidence”
For yourself always tell you self and be your best friend to conducting or Commanding don’t be shy or loose your confidence always tell yourself

“I can do it, I am very strong Drum major” Everyday before go to practice imagine and think about your successful in show or contest day…..you are in nice uniform you turn around and do very strong salute …..And then start conducting with your confidence thought the show and at last you will turn around to audience again ……………..
